"Those Cosplay Nerds” is a consulting group and business made up of 5 people, all credible in different areas of the costuming world. We have hobbyists as well as professionals who specialize in costuming, makeup, photography, and more, our main purpose being to provide tips, tricks, and fun to a creative area with limitless possibilities.

We’ll discuss how cosplay comes to life from pictures to clothing or armor as well as discuss ways to individualize your cosplay. One of the main points we will discuss is ways to personalize your cosplay and how to make your creations truly unique with a few simple twists. Researching historical eras, for example, is one process we’ll present in our panel, explaining how historical influence and textures can change a cosplay from simply accurate to a one of a kind, well thought out piece of art.

As reference, we’ll have some of the panelist’s own creations on display. These pieces will be known character costumes, but we’ll be able to show how these additions and simple choices of fabrics and detail change them from simply looking identical to looking better than identical. We have an array of sewing tips, pattern tricks, makeup tutorials and even photography ideas to present, all helping in making your character come to life. We want to convey that we are here to not just tell you how to make costumes, but how to become these characters.

Courtney Leigh is owner of Courtney Leigh Creations, a business that has been catering to cosplayers around the world since 2010. She has 4 years experience as a makeup artist and costume designer for numerous productions, haunted attractions, fashion shows, etc. and her degree in arts from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising has made pattern making and costuming second nature. She will be providing expertise in costumes, research, materials and various styles of makeup design. Amber and Matt Hunt are well known names in the AZ cosplay community, working as a cosplay duo under the name Firelight Cosplay. Their experience in body painting and creating new ways to create props and armor has given them the experience needed to talk about what to do and what not to do when thinking about materials, brands, and processes to use. We will also be joined by Jessica aka Ricochet Cosplay, an experienced blogger and writer for Confreaks & Geeks and cosplayer for 5 + years as well as Xander D., an avid cosplayer and gamer with a knack for creative photography and character embodiment.

In Game of Thrones (HBO show) and A Song of Ice and Fire (George R R Martin's novels), the continent of Westeros has an interesting and familiar history. This panel will focus not only on the specific histories of houses great and small, but on Westeros's more ancient history - from the time of the Children of the Forest to the Targaryen conquerers, and until the fall of Aerys II Targaryen. It will also be discussed how these histories may reveal Martin's commentary on "real-life" history and current events, and perhaps even help us predict future events in the series. The primary materials discussed will be Worlds of Ice and Fire, but the novels and TV show will help in a support capacity (as there have been hints in the show not present in the books).

From Stephen Strange to Leonard McCoy, pop culture is littered with doctors who put down the stethoscope for a life of adventure and danger. But what about science fiction medicine itself- can its representation in geek culture possibly be an accurate reflection of where our healthcare is, and where it’s heading? Join Christian and Jeff- geek physicians extraordinaire- for a whirlwind trip through your favorite comic books, shows, and movies and across the new frontiers of human augmentation, genetic manipulation, and regenerative medicine. Whether covering more down to Earth examples like Stan Lee’s Night Nurse (coming soon to a Daredevil Netflix series near you) or taking you to galaxies far, far away (what’s up with bacta tanks, anyway?), your hosts will explore how medicine and science fiction often influence and feed off one another in amazing ways. But beware- sometimes, in the world of cutting-edge medicine, the truth is stranger than fiction…

SUPERHEROES: A NEVER-ENDING BATTLE is the first documentary to examine the dawn of the comic book genre and its powerful legacy, as well as the evolution of the characters who leapt from the pages over the last 75 years and their ongoing worldwide cultural impact. Among the notable on-camera talents in the film are Stan Lee, Adam West, Lynda Carter, Puliter Prize winners Michael Chabon and Jules Feiffer, and interviews iwth the late greats Joe Simon (co-creator of Captain America) and Jerry Robinson (who helped create the Joker). Hosted and Narrated by Liev Schreiber.

TRUTH, JUSTICE, AND THE AMERICAN WAY (1938-1958)

During the Depression, the popularity of dozens of superhero characters opens the door for a new generation of artists and writers. World War II creates a patriotic fervor for star-spangled adventurers to represent the American spirit at war and on the home front, but in the 1950's, superheroes are caught in the fire of government scrutiny and regulation.

GREAT POWER, GREAT RESPONSIBILITY (1959-1977)

In the 1960's, a new breed of superhero emerges in the pages of Marvel Comics, inspried by the age of atomic energy and space travel and, in turn, inspiring the pop culture and pop artists of the time. Spider-Man, the Hulk, and others are the first to have "problems" with which an adult audience can identify, and contemporary social issues make their way into comic books. Black powerhouses such as the Black Panther and Luke Cage appear ont the scene and the pages of "Green Lantern/Green Arrow" explode with relevant storylines, as comic books are forced to confront th ereality of an increasingly complex world.

A HERO CAN BE ANYONE (1978-Present)

This episode captures the enthusiasm for superheroes as they are embraced in all forms of media and by all demographics, beginning with the historic "Superman" movie featuring Christopher Reeve as the Man of Steele. In 1986, Batman is overhauled as The Dark Knight to reflect the nocturnal underside of his character, and Watchmen brings new sophistication to comic book narratives, illuminating a violent and polarized world. In the burgeoning new millennium, superheroes have take over popular culture with feature films, television shows and video games complementing a new generation of web-based comics that bring superhero adventures to every corner of the world.
